The fundamental difference
Vibratory finishing can be run either wet — with a flowing liquid compound — or dry, using media alone. Both approaches are valid, but they produce different results and suit different applications. Understanding which is right for your process will save time and improve your outcomes.
Wet finishing
In wet finishing, a liquid compound is drip-fed continuously into the bowl throughout the cycle. The compound serves several important functions:
- Lubricates the media-to-component interface, controlling the cut rate
- Flushes away swarf and debris to prevent re-embedding
- Cleans and degreases the component surface
- Can brighten, passivate, or protect the surface depending on formulation
Wet finishing is the most common process and is suitable for the majority of deburring, descaling, and surface preparation applications on metals.
When to use wet finishing: Most metal deburring and surface preparation applications. Any process where cleaning the component is also required.
Dry finishing
Dry processing uses media without any liquid compound. It is typically used for:
- Burnishing and polishing to a high shine — using fine steel or plastic media with a dry burnishing compound (typically corn cob or walnut shell with a polishing compound)
- Drying and dewatering — after a wet process, components are transferred to a dry bowl with corn cob media to absorb moisture and leave a clean, dry surface
- Components that cannot be exposed to liquids
Choosing the right compound
For wet processes, compound selection is as important as media selection. Common types include:
- General purpose cutting compound — for deburring most metals
- Burnishing compound — for bright, polished finishes
- Aluminium compound — formulated to prevent staining and smearing on aluminium
- Rust inhibitor compound — protects ferrous metals during and after processing
- Descaling/pickling compound — for removing heavy scale after forging or heat treatment
