How to troubleshoot media breakdown and excessive wear

5 min read

Diagnose and resolve common media wear issues — including premature breakdown, glazing, and incorrect consumption rates.

Normal vs abnormal media wear

All finishing media wears down over time — this is normal and expected. As media wears, the abrasive particles within it are continuously exposed, maintaining cutting action. However, abnormal wear patterns indicate a process problem that needs addressing.

Common media wear problems

Premature breakdown

If media is breaking into small fragments or wearing down much faster than expected, the likely causes are:

Media glazing

Glazed media feels smooth and has lost its cutting ability. The surface has become polished rather than abrasive. Causes include:

Quick check: Rub a piece of media against a piece of mild steel. You should feel a definite cutting action. If the media slides smoothly with no abrasion, it is glazed and needs replacing.

Media loading (part material embedding into media)

This occurs when workpiece material — particularly soft metals like aluminium or copper — becomes embedded in the media surface, smearing and staining components. Solutions:

When to replace media

Replace media when it has worn down to approximately 50% of its original size, or when cut rate has noticeably reduced even after compound and amplitude adjustments. Keep a log of media top-up quantities — a sudden increase in consumption indicates a process problem.
