A Success Story Over Three Generations
With business foresight and innovative drive, this family business has shaped its own unique journey over generations. The past successes of the Sharmic motivates us every day to shape the future with further innovations.

Our beginning... In August, inspired by a vision to deliver cutting-edge and affordable engineering solutions across industries, Brian Colwell founded Sharmic Engineering Ltd. The company name itself holds a special meaning, a clever combination of his daughters' names, Sharon and Michelle - Shar-Mic.

The decision was made to incorporate the company in 1976. This significant step marked a transition from an open-ended liability structure to a limited liability structure, shielding the company's owners from personal financial risks associated with business operations. The incorporation took effect on March 31, 1976, ushering in a new era of corporate governance and enhanced financial security for the company.

CYTOBRI Limited was established as a subcontract finishing company by three directors—Cyril Clarke (CY), Anthony Burcher (TO), and Brian Colwell (BRI). In 2004, Sharmic Engineering acquired the company, with Brian, already a shareholder, playing a key role in the transition. Today, CYTOBRI operates as Sharmic Engineering’s subcontract division, continuing to provide high-quality finishing services to a wide range of industries.

In 2008-2009, Sharmic Engineering Ltd expanded its expertise by acquiring Norfinish Engineering, a well-established supplier of surface finishing machines and consumables, including liquid compounds. This acquisition strengthened Sharmic's product range and enabled the company to offer an even more comprehensive selection of finishing solutions to its customers.

Sharmic reduced its environmental impact by conducting a building energy assessment and replacing its roof with modern insulated materials, funded by an EU grant. Completed in April 2018, the new roof includes 10% translucent panels to increase natural sunlight use and decrease electrical lighting dependency during the day.

Sharmic embarked on a significant refurbishment initiative to enhance its in-house services and storage capacity. In 2021, Sharmic completed a brand-new extension to its main factory, accommodating a state-of-the-art equipment showroom and process laboratory. This cutting-edge facility empowers us to showcase our innovative equipment and conduct complimentary trials to tailor process solutions to customer components.

In a progressive move towards energy independence, Sharmic installed solar panels on its roof. This eco-friendly initiative not only reduces electricity costs but also contributes significantly to environmental conservation. Sharmic is committed to minimising its carbon footprint and embracing sustainable practices, recognising the importance of transitioning away from conventional energy sources.

Sharmic Engineering Ltd continues its commitment to sustainability with the addition of a fully electric vehicle to its fleet, alongside solar panels and hybrid vehicles. This step further reduces the company's carbon footprint while maintaining its high-quality vibratory finishing solutions.
